Since there are four of them and only one pouch to open per day, they are put on a rotation to take down the pouch, open, pull out the little note, read it, then pick one item from within without looking inside. This system works well with them and there isn't any cries of unfairness on who gets to open the pouch first or who is the last to take the goody.
Most of the notes are in German, as this is a german tradition, so I do want to keep to that since I do not have my own Christmas culture.

We are mentally preparing ourselves, I must say more me than the rest, to send the maid off in 2 weeks, we had already started doing our own chores, attempting to simulate a maid-free environment, just so the shock of not having a maid anymore would be cushioned. The boys' help around the house have been very encouraging so far, but we really don't know what is to come when she is gone. Hence we mentioned in the note, "Weiter so!" which means, Keep it up!
